Rajam founded the institution to provide India with the education it needed to reach technical expertise and was the first to introduce the study of engineering in specializations like automobile engineering, aeronautics engineering, instrument technology and electronics engineering. The institution functions with the aim to make India technically aware and advanced so as to be at par with the advancements of the world.
Later, the institute updated itself with time and started offering a wider variety of specializations in the field of engineering, such as production engineering, rubber and plastic technology and many more. In the year 1978, the institute merged with Anna University to explore wider exposure.
MIT Chennai has renowned alumni such as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Sujatha, and so many more. In addition, the institute received the recognition of "Best Overall Performance" by the Indian Society of Technical Education.
